Life left in Spirited Away?

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Jack Mathews, the New York Daily News columnist that lambasted Disney for fumbling Spirited Away a few weeks ago, has spoken to Disney Chairman Richard W. Cook and learned of their plans for Spirited Away.

The gist of the article is that Walt Disney has not given up on Spirited Away, the company is just waiting for a renewal of interest in the film before putting it back into more theatres. Said renewal of interest could possibly come from the Oscars, Cook believes that Spirited Away not only has a good chance of being nominated for the Best Animated Feature, but also for the Best Picture, the only other animated feature to ever be nominated for best picture was Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

According to Cook, the budget to market a full 1000 theatre release of Spirited Away (Its high was 151 theatres in its 5th week, and is down to 58 theatres this week), should audience interest be renewed.

Mathews also heard from representatives of other studio that they too would have marketed the film in the same way as Disney.

More (hopefully) good news can be read in Mathews' November 24th Column.
