Shonen Jump Tops in Pre-Orders

posted on by Garry Berryhill
Shonen Jump was the top monthly manga title on the Diamond Comic Distributors top 300, which is a list of the top pre-ordered comics for a given month.

The list, at Comic Book Resources is for titles ordered in December for delivery in February. Viz's manga anthology led the pack at #164, having been ordered in 7.25% the quantity of the month's top selling title. Shonen Jump was also the 123rd highest revenue generator despite its ranking, probably due to its $4.95 cover price. Other top manga performers included fan favorites Oh My Goddess! and Dragon Ball. There were sixteen manga titles in the top 300.

In Diamond's top 50 graphic novels for the same period there were fifteen manga titles, a far cry from the figures from more mainstream bookstores found here. It is worth noting that Diamond focuses largely on comic book stores, which have drastically different market conditions from those of bookstores. The top manga paperback title? None other than Astro Boy. Tokyopop had no fewer than twelve titles in the top fifty.
