Anime Unleashed in Canada?

Could be coming soon.

Last weekend, a temporary error caused an online TV Schedule to display TechTV's Anime Unleashed block under TechTV Canada.

Unfortunately this was only a mistake, but ANN has managed to find out a bit about the status of Anime Unleashed in Canada.

Hayden Mendel from TechTV Canada programming tells us that they "really, really, really want to show Anime." The problem is that Tech TV Canada's mandate does not permit them to show dramatic programing of any type.

Canadian TV stations are licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to show programming from 15 broad categories. The CRTC is akin to the FCC in the United States. When Tech TV Canada was first established their appliocation was for categories that matched thw programming of the original Tech TV, at that time Tech TV wasn't showing any "dramatic programming."

Until Tech TV Canda is mandated to show dramatic programming they can not run some of the shows from Tech TV, shows such as Max Headroom and Anime Unleashed. Broadcasting somehting outside their mandated categories could cause them to lose their license altogether.

They have requested that their mandate be increased to include dramatic programing and are anxiously waiting for a response from the CRTC.

Within a couple days of a positive response from the CRTC, Tech TV Canada would be running Anime Unleashed, unfortunately there's no guarantee of a positive response.
