New largest event in North America

posted on by Isaac Alexander
Otakon has surpassed Anime Expo this year to claim the title of the largest anime convention in North America in attendance.

Anime Expo today updated their website for 2004. On the profile section of their website, they announced their official numbers for 2003 of 17,000 (likely rounded up). Earlier this year, Otakon had announced that they had 17,338 people attend this year. This marks the first time since the early 1990s that a convention other then Anime Expo has held the spot for the largest anime event in North America. The third largest anime event on the continent in 2003 was A-Kon with 7,413. A-Kon is the oldest anime event in North America and will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2004.
