USA Today Booklist, September 24-30: Naruto Lingers
posted on 2007-10-04 04:24 EDTIn the final week before Viz Media published the next three volumes of the Naruto manga on October 2, Naruto volumes 17 and 18 were the only manga titles on the USA Today's list of the nation's top 150 best-selling books for September 24-30. After peaking at #37 several weeks ago, Naruto volume 18 held the #127 spot (down from #74 last week). Volume 17 was just barely on the list, dropping from #100 last week to #149.

Though slavishly formulaic and distinctly kid-oriented, this series about two starkly contrasting 8th graders who become a magical girl duo still looks good enough, and is distinguishable enough in its action components, to warrant at least a sampling by anime fans with diversified interests.
Fushigi Yûgi -VIZBIG Edition- GN 2
Watase's Fushigi Yûgi is without a doubt one of the titles to set the standard for what “manga” in the United States has come to be. For this reason alone, it is a must-read. But even if you couldn't care a whit about its historical significance, it's still a fun story that may be enjoyed purely on its own terms.
Gantz DVD 1...a fascinating series, and while it deserves a better release platform, it's definitely worth seeing. When all is said and done though, is Gantz really worth getting two episodes at a time?
