The Toronto International Film Festival has announced that it will screen the North American premieres of Mamoru Oshii's The Sky Crawlers anime film and Toshio Lee's manga-based live-action Detroit Metal City film in September. Oshii directs his first animated film in four years with his adaptation of Hiroshi Mori's military romance novels that are set on a alternate-history world. The Sky Crawlers' cast includes Oscar-nominated Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Ryo Kase (Letters From Iwo Jima, Cutey Honey, Honey and Clover), Chiaki Kuriyama (Battle Royale, Kill Bill) and Shosuke Tanihara (Vexille, Lovely Complex, Fudoh: The New Generation).
Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note's L) stars in Detroit Metal City, the comedy about a soft pop crooner's unlikely rise to glory as the lead singer of a death metal band. The film adapts Kiminori Wakasugi's popular manga of the same name. The movie will screen on September 5 at one minute before midnight, and more screenings will be announced on August 26. The festival will run from September 4 to September 13.
