Kinnikuman Onigiri, Meat-Kun Meat Pie Sold in Japan

posted on by Egan Loo

The LAWSON chain of Japanese convenience stores began selling Kinnikuman Gyūdon-Fū Onigiri Ōmori (Muscleman Large Beef Bowl-Style Rice Ball) and Meat-kun's Meat Pie on August 19 to mark the 29th anniversary of Takashi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai's Kinnikuman manga. The number "29" ("niku") can be a Japanese homonym for the Japanese word for meat ("niku") and the "niku" in Kinnikuman. As the name implies, Gyūdon-Fū Onigiri Ōmori offers a large serving of rice and beef seasoned like a beef bowl. Meat-kun's Meat Pie is a bread pastry, shaped like the Kinnikuman character Meat-kun, that has been stuffed with a tomato-based meat sauce. The Kinnikuman toys were imported into the United States as "M.U.S.C.L.E.," and the later manga and anime sequels were translated into English as Ultimate Muscle.
