Grave of the Fireflies, Tezuka Marathon in DC Saturday

Author Frederik Schodt, Pulitzer winner John Dower, scholar Susan Napier to speak

Washington, D.C. will host a Saturday screening of Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli's 1988 animated film Grave of the Fireflies at 2:00 p.m. in the Freer Gallery of Art's Meyer Auditorium as part of the Anime Masterpieces series. The screening will be accompanied by a panel session with anime and manga historian Frederik L. Schodt, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John Dower, and Japanese literary authority Susan Napier.

The DC Anime Club will also be hosting a tribute to the "God of Manga," Osamu Tezuka, through a marathon of anime films on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Martin Luthur King, Jr. Memorial Library in Room A10. Titles to be screened include Kimba the White Lion, Phoenix, and Astro Boy.

Grave of the Fireflies will next be screened at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts on February 11, 2009. Anime Masterpieces will begin screening Michael Arias and Studio 4°C's Tekkonkinkreet film next month. David Bowers and IMAGI's computer-animated film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy manga is scheduled to open in over 3,000 North American theaters on October 23, 2009.
