Uchū Kyōdai Astronaut Manga to Bundle Rocket Fragment

posted on by Egan Loo
14th volume to include fragment that actually went into space

The 14th limited-edition volume of Chūya Koyama's Uchū Kyōdai (Space Brothers) astronaut manga will bundle a fragment of a space rocket when it ships on June 23. For 2,480 yen (about US$30.60), the book will include a palm-sized fragment of a rocket that actually went into space. (The publisher Kodansha will also ship a regular edition of the volume without the fragment.)

The award-winning story follows two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, who made a vow as kids to travel to space. The younger brother Hibito did become an astronaut, but not Mutta. However, Mutta's life changes one fateful day.

Koyama launched the manga in Kodansha's Morning magazine in 2007. Actors Shun Oguri (Hana Zakari no Kimi-tachi e, Gokusen, Hana Yori Dango [2005], Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa) and Masaki Okada (Hana Zakari no Kimi-tachi e, Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu, Mahō Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto) will star in a live-action film adaptation of the manga. The crew and cast will film for six days in June at Florida's Brevard County, home of the John F. Kennedy Space Center.
