Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart Blu-Ray/DVD Release on January 9 (Updated)

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Both Ghibli films to be released by Studio Canal.

Studio Canal has confirmed to ANN that two Studio Ghibli titles are scheduled for release on January 9. Arrietty will be released as a DVD, Blu-ray Double Play and Limited Collectors edition; and Whisper of the Heart as a Blu-ray Double Play. (Whisper is already available on U.K. DVD.) The press release for Arrietty is available here and the press release for Whisper of the Heart is here.

Arrietty will have an RRP of £19.99 as a DVD and £24.99 as both a Blu-ray Double Play and a Collectors Edition; the provisional artwork for the Collectors Edition is pictured left. A number of extras will only be available on the Double Play and the Collectors Edition. These will include interviews with Hayao Miyazaki (who chose the source British book, The Borrowers, to be adapted as Arrietty) and director Hiromasa Yonebayashi.

Whisper of the Heart will be released as a Blu-Ray Double Play with an RRP of £24.99. Extras will include background artwork from “The Baron's Story” and an extra entitled “4 Masterpieces of Naohisa Inoue: From Start to Finish.” (Naohisa Inoue is the artist whose work figures in the fantasy scenes of the film.)

Both Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart had been previously scheduled for home release in November. Arrietty is due to open in America next year in a Disney-produced dub, featuring a different voice-cast from the British version and a new title, The Secret World of Arrietty.

In addition, the U.K Amazon website currently lists a new book, The Art of the Secret World of Arrietty as being published on January 19, as a 200-page VIZ Media paperback. The same book is listed on the U.S. Amazon site as scheduled for February 7, which would be ten days before the film's U.S. cinema release on February 17.
