Garden of Words Sells 100,000 Tickets as Shinkai's #1 Film

Makoto Shinkai's latest film, The Garden of Words has sold 100,000 tickets in 23 theaters as of June 27. It was originally planned for a three-week theatrical run, but not only is it extending its run, but it is adding 16 theaters in mid-July.

The film has maintained its top spot among films in mini theaters for three straight weeks. In 10 days, it matched the number of tickets that Shinkai's 5 Centimeters per Second film sold during its entire run. In 14 days, it matched the number of tickets that Shinkai's last work, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, sold. As a result, it is now the director's top-grossing film.

The film is available for download on iTunes simultaneously with its film run. It will premiere in Los Angeles during Anime Expo and in South Korea during the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival this month.
