Monthly Ikki Magazine Suspends Publication

posted on by Sarah Nelkin

The editors of Shogakukan's Monthly Ikki magazine are announcing in the September issue on July 25 that the manga magazine is suspending publication on September 25. The staff said that the magazine has stood by its motto, "The dawn of comics has only just arrived," since it began publication. Throughout the 14 years of the magazine's run, they aimed for new and innovative manga, although not all of those days were pleasant. The staff then explained that the reason that the magazine had remained for so long was due to its readers, and the staff gave their thanks.

In conclusion, the staff explained that although the magazine's "ship" did not arrive at a new world, none of the staff has given up on reaching it, and will depart for that new land on each of their own new "boats." The final statement of the staff's letter reads, "'The dawn of comics has only just arrived.' Ikki still believes that, even now."

The magazine "set sail" as a spinoff of Big Comic Spirits magazine in 2000, and became a standalone monthly magazine in its own right in 2003. It has been the home to the Afterschool Charisma, Bokurano: Ours, Children of the Sea, Dorohedoro, House of Five Leaves, Kingyo Used Books, I'll Give It My All... Tomorrow, Ride Back, Saru, Saturn Apartments, Sunny, and Gunjō manga, as well as many others. Viz published or released online several of those titles in English under "Sigikki," a collaboration between the Viz Signature imprint and Ikki.
