Film opens in select theaters today

FUNimation Entertainment began streaming a second theatrical trailer for Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Screenings start on Tuesday, August 5 in nearly 800 North American theaters, and will continue on August 6, 7, and 9. Tickets for the screenings are now on sale through the official English website.

In addition, Funimation began streaming a message to Dragon Ball Z fans from its founder and CEO Gen Fukunaga.

A red carpet premiere was held on Thursday, July 3.

Funimation describes the story:

Following the events from the Dragon Ball Z television series, after the defeat of Majin Buu, a new power awakens and threatens humanity. Beerus, an ancient and powerful God of Destruction, searches for Goku after hearing rumors of the Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza. Realizing the threat Beerus poses to their home planet, the Z-fighters must find a way to stop him before it's too late. Only Goku, humanity's last hope, can ascend to the level of a legendary Super Saiyan God and stop Beerus from destroying Earth, and possibly the entire universe! Fans of the series will be delighted to know that Battle of Gods is an original work from Dragon Ball creator, himself, Akira Toriyama.

The September issue of Shueisha's V Jump magazine announced last month that a new Dragon Ball Z movie will open during the Golden Week string of holidays next spring. Toriyama is personally credited with the original concept, screenplay and character designs of the new movie "that the entire universe eagerly awaits!!"
