Over Lord Fantasy RPG Light Novel Has Anime in the Works

posted on by Kyle Cardine
Story involves a gamer who decides not to log out after an online game shuts down

The wraparound jacket band on the seventh volume of Kugane Maruyama's fantasy novel Over Lord is announcing on Saturday that an anime adaptation is in the works.

The story begins with Yggdrasil, a popular online game which is quietly shut down one day. However, the protagonist Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as "the most powerful wizard." The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) begining to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.

Kugane Maruyama began the series online in 2010, and Kadokawa's Enterbrain imprint then published it in print with illustrations by so-bin in 2012. The fourth and sixth print volumes bundled drama CDs with Satoshi Hino, Yumi Hara, Emiri Katō, and Sumire Uesaka in the main cast. Enterbrain released a promotional video to mark the release of the third volume, with the first two volumes already having 100,000 copies in print.
