About Yoshitoshi ABe

About Yoshitoshi ABe

Internationally famous illustrator and manga artist, Yoshitoshi ABe was recognised as a graffiti artist during his teenage years and his experience during this time still influences his darker character designs to this day. Yoshitoshi went onto work as a manga assistant and later graduated with a master of fine arts from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

Yoshitoshi ABe never set out to work in anime or manga, in fact he wasn't allowed to read Manga as a child (you can read about it here). After he published some of his illustrations on his website Yoshitoshi was approached to join the creative team of Serial Experiments Lain. There Yoshitoshi collaborated on themes and character designs for Lain with writer Chiaki J. Konaka (Digimon Tamers) and the pair later went onto work on Texhnolyze.

Yoshitoshi has also published several doujinshi and artbooks, two of the former have been converted into anime series. NieA Under 7 was released in April 2000 and had many of the same staff as Serial Experiments Lain. Haibane Renmei was conceived as "The Haibane of Old Home" in 1998 and Yoshitoshi reworked the concept and later published two chapters of "The Haibane of Old Home" dōjinshi from 2001. Radix produced Haibane Renmei's anime adaptation and Yoshitoshi himself handled the series composition and script in 2002.

While Madman Entertainment previously released Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze, Universal Sony Home Pictures Australia re-released all three series last year.
