Live-Action Black Butler Opens in UK Cinemas Friday

posted on by Andrew Osmond

Black Butler, the live-action version of Yana Toboso's Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) manga, will open in UK cinemas on October 17, subtitled. It is rated as '15' on the BBFC website for 'stong violence and gory images.' Venues confirmed to be screening the film are listed below.

While the original Black Butler manga and its anime adaptation are set in 19th century England, the live-action film is set more than 130 years later in 2020, in an Asian city where Western and Asian cultures freely intermingle. Another difference is that the butler's master in this version is female, though she impersonates a man. Since only males can take the reins of the Phantomhive family, a young woman named Shiori dons male clothes and the name Kiyoharu Genpō to lead the massive Phantom Corporation.
