Girl Friend Beta is a very unusual title, being an adaptation of CyberAgent's 2012 social romance simulation smartphone game which to date now has over 100 different girls to spend time with. This anime adaptation follows high school girl Shiina Kokomi and her circle of friends as they support each other through the situations that occur in daily high school life.

Naotaka Hayashi (Morita-san wa Mukuchi, Magi - The Kingdom of Magic assistant director) is directing Girl Friend Beta at studio SILVER LINK (No-Rin, C³, Baka and Test). Michiko Yokote (Love Stage!!, No-Rin, Genshiken) is handling series composition and Noriko Tsutsumiya (Dragonar Academy, C³, Kokoro Connect animation director) is designing the characters based on original character designs by QP:flapper (MM!, Oreimo 2, Sora no Method).

Crunchyroll has licensed the series for streaming around the world, including Australia and New Zealand and in can view viewed in the UK on Viewster.

CyberAgent's blogging website Ameba started service for the game for smartphones in 2012. As of June 2014, the number of registered users has passed 5.3 million. The game features over one hundred girls for the player to date, each voiced by a different voice actress. Some of the game's cast includes Yui Ogura as Momoko Asahina, Nana Inoue as Kazumi Kawabuchi, Megumi Toyoguchi as Akiho Shigetō, and Yukari Tamura as Koruri Tokitani.
