Ao Oni Film Adapting Horror Game Gets Sequel

posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Director, scenario writer, cast to be changed from 1st film that premiered in July

A sequel to the film adaptation of the free online horror game Ao Oni (Blue Demon) has been green-lit for release in Japan next summer. A visual for the film (seen above) featuring the monster Fuwatty was also unveiled.

The story and setting of the new film will be completely separate from the one that premiered earlier this year, and is labeled as a "New Chapter." In order to get closer to the original ideas and story of the source material, the director, scenario writer, and cast are being replaced. The previous film starred AKB48 member Anna Iriyama as the main heroine.

The first Ao Oni film premiered in Japanese theaters on July 5, and grossed over two hundred million yen (about US$16.604 million) during its run in 80 theaters. The film also had a screening at the same time on Niconico, and with over ten thousand paying viewers, it broke the website's record for the number of viewers on a paid program.

Ao Oni is a horror game that makes the player solve various puzzles and riddles in order to escape a demon in a locked or enclosed space. Videos of the game on YouTube and Nico Nico have passed 50 million views. The game is available to play in both Japanese and English. A novel inspired by the game was released in Japan last year (cover seen left).
