Viz Media Acquires Master Merchandise Rights for Terra Formars

posted on
Company expects to roll out merchandise starting this year

Viz Media announced on Thursday that it has been named the North American master merchandise licensee for the Terra Formars anime series.

Starting this year Viz Media plans to release a variety of products based on the animated series, which is itself based on Yū Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana's manga. Viz already licensed the manga and will release the fifth volume on March 17.

Viz Media describes the story:

InTerra Formars, after humanity's first manned mission to the Red Planet was lost a second expedition arrives. The explorers prepare to exterminate the cockroaches that were used to transform the Martian environment, but are shocked to discover that the insects have mutated into giant, aggressive humanoids with one overriding goal – exterminate the humans! However, this crew of explorers has each undergone the “Bugs Procedure,” terrifying experimental surgery designed to make them more than human…

The television anime adapting the Annex 1 arc of the manga premiered in September, and Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired. The companion original video anime (OVA) project adapts the Bugs 2 arc on discs bundled with the 10th and 11th manga volumes. The Annex 1 arc takes place 20 years after the Bugs 2 arc.

Viz Media Europe announced in September that it acquired the license for TV, DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and merchandising rights in Europe. No company has announced North American home video rights for the series.

Prolific director Takashi Miike (live-action films of Ichi the Killer, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Yatterman, Tokyo Tribe, As the Gods Will, Crows, Mogura no Uta) is helming a live-action film adaptation slated for next year.
