Marvelous Acquires G-Mode Mobile Game Company, Cancels Kaio: King of Pirates

Online/app games do well as company's overall sales dip

Japanese game developer Marvelous published an amendment to its April 2014 to March 2015 earnings forecast to report a loss of profits for the fiscal year. In the statement, the company announced that it will cancel the Kaio: King of Pirates game project. However, the company separately announced the acquisition of the mobile game company G-mode.

Marvelous cited a depression in home game sales and increased competition as the reason for its declining sales, but reported success in the area of online games and smart phone apps, such as Ken to Mahō no Logress: Inishie no Megami.

Marvelous reported a loss of 461 million yen (about 3.8 million dollars) in cancelling Kaio: King of Pirates.

Megaman co-designer Keiji Inafune, Marvelous, and Comcept's Kaio: King of Pirates Nintendo 3DS adventure game was announced in 2011. The game was slated for release in 2012, but was delayed until 2013 and then 2014. Animation Studio Pierrot signed on to create the anime adaptation.

G-mode owns most of Data East's catalog, which includes game properties such as Joe & Mac, Magical Drop, and Fighter's History.
