Brave10's Shimotsuki to Launch Joker Reboot Manga

Yū Maki's original sci-fi action series Joker ended in 2004

The August issue of Shinshokan's Wings magazine announced on Saturday that Kairi Shimotsuki (Brave 10, Madness, Devil Kings Basara) will launch the Joker Reboot manga inspired by Yū Maki's original Joker manga. The series will debut with color opening pages in the magazine's October issue on August 28.

Maki's original story begins when the young police investigator Rīn Rikudō follows an assignment that leads him to the mysterious and beautiful person called Joker. Rīn witnesses Joker's ability to transform its body and become a man or woman at will. Joker is a synthetic human who can read people's DNA to change appearance. Rīn joins Joker in various male and female forms and roles to deal with a variety of criminal cases.

Shimotsuki's series will be the first new Joker manga in 11 years. Maki's original manga with Katsumi Michihara's illustrations ran from 1987 to 2004. The science-fiction action series inspired three novel series and the 1992 original video anime Joker - Marginal City.

Shimotsuki's manga adaptation of Hiroshi Mori's Subete ga F ni Naru novel premiered in the July issue of Kodansha's ARIA magazine on May 28. She ended her Makai Ishi Mephisto (Hell Doctor Mephisto) manga in February.

North American publisher Digital Manga Publishing licensed Kairi Shimotsuki's A Century of Temptation manga and published it in 2013. Her Brave10 S manga inspired a 12-episode television anime series, which Crunchyroll streamed in 2012. NIS America released a Blu-ray box of Brave10 in October 2013.

Tokyopop published Shimotsuki's Madness manga and acquired her first Brave10 manga series. (Tokyopop did not publish Brave10 before closing its North American division in December 2014). Udon Entertainment published Shimotsuki's Devil Kings Basara manga.
