Film's run was extended to Monday after grossing US$8 million in initial Aug. 4-12 run

FUNimation Entertainment announced on Thursday via press release that the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' anime film grossed US$8.4 million total during its North American run, including its additional "encore" screenings.

The film's initial nine-day limited engagement ended last week with US$8 million gross. However, due to demand, the company extended the film's North American run until August 17 as an "encore release," according to David Wengrod, Vice President of Theatrical Event Distribution in Group 1200 Media.

The previous Dragon Ball film, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, earned US$2,553,002 total in the U.S.

The company will release the series on home video on October 20 and on digital platforms on October 9. The DVD will include the film and the Blu-ray and DVD combo pack will include voice actor featurettes and footage from the red carpet premiere. Funimation will also release a collector's edition with these features, special packaging, and four postcards.

The film surpassed the U.S. box office totals of both Howl's Moving Castle (US$4,711,096) and The Wind Rises (US$5,209,580), and is ranked #9 among all anime films in the U.S. to date according to Box Office Mojo. The film also had the highest per-screen average among all top 10 movies in the box-office on three separate days.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' opened on 895 theaters on August 4, then played on 901 theaters on August 5 and 6, and dropped to 57 screens on August 7. The film then played on 913 U.S. theaters and 42 Canadian theaters on Saturday, August 8, before dropping to 183 on Sunday, August 9. The film was initially not going to play in any theaters on August 10, before returning to about 800 theaters on August 11, but executive vice president and chief operating officer of Funimation Michael Duboise stated that due to "overwhelming response from our fans," 182 theaters played the film on Monday, and 824 theaters played it on Tuesday. The original limited engagement ended on August 12 in 457 theaters.

The film opened in 895 theaters with US$1,967,626 at #6 on August 4, and added US$1,553,580 at #5 on August 5. The film brought in another US$417,138 on August 6 and added US$57,730 on August 7.

In Japan, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' earned approximately 1.29 billion yen (about US$10.9 million) in its first six days, and sold more than 1 million tickets in its first seven days at the Japanese box office.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' premiered on 658 screens in both 2D and 3D in theaters across Japan on April 18, although advance screenings were held before then. The film was the first Japanese film to open in 3D IMAX Digital Theaters.

Funimation hosted the North American premiere of the film on April 11 in Los Angeles. The company then premiered the film's English dub at Anime Expo on July 2.
