Kaneda's voice acdtor Mitsuo Iwata will attend screenings in Tokyo, Kawaguchi

The Japanese website Anikore has revealed that it will host screenings of Katsuhiro Ōtomo's Akira anime film on November 21-22 and December 5 in Tokyo and in Kawaguchi. The film will be presented in a 4K resolution transfer from an HDCAM remaster, and with 5.1 channel audio. Mitsuo Iwata, who voiced Kaneda in the film, will attend the screenings.

The film will show in two different venues:

November 21 (Theater Shinjuku) - 2,500 yen (about US$20) for unassigned seats

  • 11:30 p.m. - 1:45 a.m.
  • 2:30 a.m. - 4:45 a.m. (November 22)

December 5 (Kawaguchi Skip City) - 3,000 yen (about US$20) for unassigned seats

  • 10:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
  • 1:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

In addition, Anikore notes that there might be a third screening in Kawaguchi Skip City if there is enough demand. The December 5 screening will also feature a talk segment from Iwata, as well as a raffle open to all attendees with the opportunity to win rare merchandise, such as figures, posters, and theater program leaflets.

The screening is also offering 10% cash back to student attendees if they bring their student ID to the screening.

Akira premiered in Japan in 1988. Katsuhiro Ōtomo directed the sci-fi film, based on his manga of the same name. Streamline Pictures released the film in North America in 1991. The film has since then been distributed in multiple regions and languages, re-released with a new English dub. The film has earned widespread critical acclaim as a classic anime film, and has been credited as a significant element in popularizing Japanese animation outside of Japan.
