Report states game had 79,000 social mentions on release day

Adobe Systems Inc. released its Adobe Digital Index "Gaming Trends 2015" report on Thursday, and the report found that the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain video game sold "just over" US$179 million in revenue globally on its launch day. By comparison, the highest grossing film of all time in terms of opening day revenue, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, earned US$91 million on July 15, 2011.

Additionally, the report said that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had 79,000 social mentions on release day, compared to the 41,000 social mentions for Avengers: Age of Ultron on its release day on May 1. Avengers: Age of Ultron earned US$84.5 million on its opening day in the U.S., and holds the second place record behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain shipped for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in the United States and Europe on September 1, followed by Japan on September 2.

The report also found that video game revenue "generated from E3" in June 2015 was "only 13% shy" of November 2014, during the holiday shopping period. Adobe added that E3 generated 3.5 million "social engagements" between June 14-18. The report also noted that video game sales were also up 4% in August 2015 compared to August 2014.
