Yo-kai Watch Tops Star Wars in Attendance, But Not at Japanese Box Office

Sold more tickets in Japan Saturday-Sunday, but earned less in 2- & 3-day tallies

Eiga Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan!, the second film the Yōkai Watch franchise, sold 974,557 tickets on 434 screens for 1,057,808,800 yen (about US$8.714 million) in its first two days since opening on Saturday. It topped Star Wars: The Force Awakens (800,258 tickets on 958 screens) in tickets sold in those two days.

However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened in Japan on Friday instead of Saturday, and sold 1.04 million tickets on 958 screens from Friday to Sunday. It also earned more money across its first three days (1.6 billion yen or US$13 million) and in the Saturday-Sunday timeframe (1,245,023,900 yen or US$10.257 million).

The live-action film of Ichigo Takano's Orange manga dropped from #1 to #3 in its second weekend. It sold 210,007 tickets — 80% of the tickets it sold in its first weekend.

Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Chō Movie Taisen Genesis, the seventh Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Movie Taisen entry, also dropped from #4 to #6 in its second weekend. High Speed! -Free! Starting Days- stayed at #9 in its third weekend. The Girls und Panzer film dropped from #8 off the top 10.
