Funimation plans theatrical release for 2 days in N. America

Entertainment news website IGN posted FUNimation Entertainment's English-dubbed trailer for the Psycho-Pass film on Tuesday. Funimation plans to debut the film in North American theaters on March 15 and 16.

Aniplus-Asia describes the film's story [Warning: The story summary below contain spoilers for Psycho-Pass season 1. Highlight text to read the summary.]:

The year is 2112. Rookie inspector Akane Tsunemori and enforcer Shinya Kogami cross paths with one man. That man; Shogo Makishima turns out to be the mastermind of a past case, and Kogami's target for revenge.

When Makishima goes on to shake the foundations of a peacekeeping system, he poses the question about where justice exists. In time, Kogami takes justice into his own hands against Makishima, before he goes into hiding…

In the year 2116, the government of Japan begins exporting the Sibyl System and unmanned robot drones to conflict areas in an attempt to spread its system to all corners of the globe. SEAUn; the Southeast Asia Union—decides to test the Sibyl System, and with it, the floating city of Shambhalafloat achieves fleeting peace and security.

However, shortly thereafter, terrorists from SEAUn enter Japanese soil… With the involvement of one man, the terrorists attempt to sneak through the Sibyl System and launch an attack against the system's brain. Akane Tsunemori of the Criminal Investigation Division sets off to investigate Shambhalafloat.

The truth of the justice brought down on new land, is revealed…

The film opened on January 9, 2015 at #4 in the Japanese box office and earned 247.8 million yen (US$2.08 million). The film won several honors at the Newtype Anime Awards 2015.

The Psycho Pass movie is based on the original Psycho Pass sci-fi television anime series, which first aired in 2012. Funimation licensed the series in North America. A second season began airing last October, which Funimation similarly licensed and simulcasted.

Writer Makoto Fukami (Chotto Kawaii Iron Maiden, Ōsama-tachi no Viking) had wrote the film's screenplay with Gen Urobuchi. Fukami had collaborated with Urobuchi on the first season of Psycho-Pass, but Tow Ubukata handled series composition of the second season.
