This year's 13th issue of Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine announced on Monday that the sequel film to the live-action film adaptation of Noboru Takahashi's Mogura no Uta crime manga will open in Japan in December. The film is currently conducting principal photography abroad.
The magazine also celebrated Takahashi publishing 500 chapters of the manga by featuring the manga on the magazine's cover (seen right), and with a special illustration (seen below). Kazuo Umezu also drew a special chapter that crosses over his own Makoto-chan manga with Mogura no Uta.
Director Takashi Miike (live-action Ace Attorney, Crows Zero, Yatterman, For Love's Sake, Ichi the Killer), scriptwriter Kankuro Kudo (The Legend of Kamui, Maiko Haaaan!!!, Miike's Zebraman, Ping-Pong, Go), and lead actor Toma Ikuta (Hana Zakari no Kimi-tachi e, We Were There, Akihabara @ DEEP, Honey and Clover) will reunite for the sequel.
The first film, Mogura no Uta: Senyū Sōsakan Reiji, opened in February, 2014.
The crime action story revolves around Reiji Kikukawa, a police officer who goes undercover to infilitrate a gangster syndicate. Takahashi launched the manga in Shogakukan's Weekly Young Sunday magazine in 2005, but he moved the manga to Weekly Big Comic Spirits after Weekly Young Sunday ceased publication in 2008. Shogakukan published the 47th compiled book volume in December. The series has more than 6.5 million copies in print.
Takahashi is also drawing a side story, Mogura no Uta Gaiden Papillon Dance, in Shogakukan's Monthly Spirits. Shogakukan published the 5th compiled book volume in December.
