Tokyo International Film Festival Highlights Mamoru Hosoda, Shunji Iwai

posted on by Karen Ressler

The 29th annual Tokyo International Film Festival announced on Thursday that its Animation Focus will highlight the works of director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, The Boy and The Beast) and its Japan Now section will focus on director Shunji Iwai (The Case of Hana & Alice).

Hosoda directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and, most recently, The Boy and The Beast. He established Studio Chizu in 2011 to produce Wolf Children and The Boy and The Beast. Last year, Tokyo International Film Festival awarded an "Arigatō" (Thank You) Award for contributions to the Japanese film industry.

Iwai wrote, directed, and composed the music for The Case of Hana & Alice, his first-feature length anime film and prequel to his earlier live-action film Hana & Alice. The film debuted in February 2015. Iwai previously wrote Baton — the 65-minute hybrid American/Japanese, live-action/animated work that another live-action filmmaker, Ryuhei Kitamura, directed.

The festival will be held from October 25-November 3, 2016.

The festival offered a special Gundam program last year, and two years ago the festival hosted a large event dedicated to the works of Hideaki Anno.
