Godzilla: Resurgence Earns 624 Million Yen on Opening Weekend

One Piece Film Gold moves from #1 to #3, 2016 Pokémon film from #3 to #5, Anpanman from #10 to #9

The Godzilla: Resurgence (Shin Godzilla) film sold 412,302 tickets for 624,610,700 yen (about US$6.08 million) on 441 screens in its opening weekend, ranking #1 in the Japanese box office for the July 30-31 weekend. The film is tracking 328.7% higher than 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars, the last TOHO Godzilla film before this one. Godzilla: Final Wars grossed a total of 1.26 billion yen (about US$12.27 million). The film is also tracking 122.8% higher than the 2014 Legendary Pictures Godzilla film's Japanese box office performance. That film grossed a total of 3.2 billion yen (about US$31.17 million) in the Japanese box office. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi directed the latest film, and the film is tracking 55.2% lower than Anno's previous film, the Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo anime film, which grossed a total of 5.3 billion yen (about US$51.63 million).

The film opened in Japan on July 29, and Funimation plans to release the film in theaters in late 2016.

One Piece Film Gold movie went from #1 to #3 in its second weekend. The anime film has earned a total of 2,364,107,000 yen (about US$23.10 million) and sold 1,709,909 tickets on 743 screens.

The Pokémon the Movie XY & Z: Volcanion to Karakuri no Magearna film went from #3 to #5 in its third weekend in 360 screens.

The Soreike! Anpanman Omocha no Hoshi no Nanda to Runda anime film rose from #10 to #9 in tis fifth weekend on 182 screens. The film is projected to surpass the 540 million yen (about US$5.26 million) gross of the previous film in the franchise, Soreike! Anpanman: Mija to Mahō no Lamp. That earlier film had the highest gross in the franchise's history.
