Slim model to be new standard; pro model to support 4K/HDR

Sony confirmed at its press conference on Wednesday that it will release a new, slimmer PlayStation 4 console called PlayStation 4 Slim and an upgraded console called PlayStation 4 Pro.

The PlayStation 4 Slim will launch on September 15 for US$299. The model will be the new standard PS4.

The PlayStation 4 Pro console will ship on November 10 for US$399. It will feature upgraded CPU, boosted clock rate, and a one terabyte hard drive. The system will have ultra-high-definition 4K and HDR support. Several games that have previously been released will get upgrade patches for PS4 Pro. Sony also announced that it will offer HDR support for all other PS4 consoles via a firmware update.

The same discs and downloads will be available on both the standard model and the new PS4 Pro, but some games will play differently on PS4 Pro to support the higher resolution. Sony previously announced that it anticipated "all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4."

Sony had confirmed in June that it would release a high-end PlayStation 4 model. The system was previously code-named "Neo."

The PS4 has shipped 40 million users worldwide.

Update: Release date and price for PS4 Pro added; HDR support will be added to all other PS4 consoles.
