Koseki plays film-original character Ren Nagayama in 2017 film adaptation of Kemuri Karakara's manga

The staff of the live-action film adaptation of Kemuri Karakara's Laughing Under the Clouds (Donten ni Warau) manga revealed on Thursday that Yūta Koseki (Ashita ni Nareba, Sora to Umi no Aida) has joined the cast in the role of film-original character Ren Nagayama, a member of the Yamainu Squad formed by Tomomi Iwakura. He is an old friend to both Tenka and Abe, and acts like the idol of the Yamainu Squad.

Previously announced cast members include:

Sōta Fukushi (seen left in picture below) as Tenka Kumō, and Kirato Wakayama (right) as Chūtarō Kumō

Renn Kiriyama as Shirasu Kinjō. Shirasu arrived at Kumō Shrine gravely injured, and Tenka nursed him back to health. They have become close friends ever since, and he has lived in the shrine and become like another brother to the Kumō brothers.

Yūki Furukawa as Abe no Sōsei, the leader of the Yamainu Squad. He holds himself to a strict standard, and is honest and stubborn. He is an old friend to Tenka, but he has not yet forgiven Tenka for leaving the squad.

Shunsuke Daito as Seiichirō Takamine, the vice-captain of the Yamainu Squad, formed by Tomomi Iwakura to find and exterminate Orochi. He wields a large zanbatō sword, and team leader Abe no Sōsei places great confidence in him.

In addition, Yūma Nakayama will play the character Soramaru Kumō.

The film will open in Japan in 2017. Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass chief director) is directing the film, and Yuuya Takahashi (Laughing Under the Clouds anime series, Tiger & Bunny, Lupin the Third) wrote the script.

The story of Laughing Under the Clouds takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era. The number of people in Japan who feel dissatisfaction toward the government are increasing due to the increasing speed of Westernization and the ban on samurai. In order to curb the increased rate of crime, the government opens a new prison. The three brothers of the Kumo family are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them on the way.

Karakara launched the manga in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus magazine in 2011, and ended it in May 2013. Mag Garden published six compiled book volumes for the series. The manga was adapted into a 12-episode television anime in 2014. Funimation streamed the series as it aired with both English subtitles and an English broadcast dub, one of two shows that debuted its broadcast dubbing strategy. The manga also received a stage play adaptation that ran from February-March 2015, and a new stage play that ran from May 27 until June 5 in Tokyo, and then in Osaka on June 10-11.

Karakara launched a sequel titled Donten ni Warau Gaiden (Laughing Under the Clouds - Side Story) on Mag Garden's "Beat's" manga site in 2014. Mag Garden published the second of the manga's three planned volumes in May 2015. Karakara launched the Rengoku ni Warau (Laughing in Purgatory) prequel manga in Monthly Comic Garden in January 2014.
