Record of Lodoss War: The Grey Witch is the first volume in the novel series, and The Sneaker Bunko imprint printed a revised edition of that volume in 2013. The play adapts the revised novel volume with Mizuno and publisher Kadokawa's supervision. Hideki Sonoda is writing the script and directing the play, and Kazunori Mori is choreographing the fight sequences. You-Keys Entertainment is producing the project, and 1107 is collaborating on the production. BS Asahi is also sponsoring, and Kadokawa is collaborating in cooperation with Char-Ani, Game On, and BitCash.

Record of Lodoss War began as a series of magazine articles that recounted the pencil-and-paper role-playing game sessions of players who called themselves Group SNE. Those fantasy adventures evolved into a series of novels by Mizuno that now have over 10 million copies in print.

The novels in turn inspired manga, two original video anime projects, a full-length television anime series, and two animated film projects. Central Park Media released the 1990 Record of Lodoss War video anime series and the 1998 Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight television anime sequel in North America. One of the animated film projects is Welcome to Lodoss Island! (Yōkoso Lodoss Tō e!), a short that featured the characters in super-deformed form. The super-deformed series Meshimase Lodoss-tō Senki Sorette Oishii no? aired in April 2014.
