Viz Media Hosts Sailor Moon R Screening Event in Los Angeles on January 13

Film to eventually screen in 300 theaters in U.S. in late January

Viz Media announced on Wednesday that it will host a premiere screening event of the Sailor Moon R: The Movie (Sailor Moon R Movie: Promise of the Rose) anime film on January 13 at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. PST. The screening will include a live Q&A session with the English language cast and staff.

Viz Media is working with Eleven Arts to screen the film in more than 300 theaters across the U.S. in late January. Viz Media will reveal more details about the wider screening at a later date.

The Los Angeles premiere event and the wider screening will both also screen the "Make Up! Sailor Guardians" (Make-Up! Sailor Senshi) anime short alongside the film. Viz Media and Eleven Arts will screen the film and short in both an English-dubbed version and an English-subtitled version. Theatergoers will also get a bonus gift while supplies last.

Ben Diskin will voice Fiore in the English dub of the film.

Viz describes the film:

Long before Mamoru found his destiny with Usagi, he gave a single rose in thanks to a lonely boy who helped him recover from the crash that claimed his parents. This long-forgotten friend, Fiore, has been searching the galaxy for a flower worthy of that sweet gesture long ago. The mysterious flower he finds is beautiful, but has a dark side- it has the power to take over planets. To make matters worse, the strange plant is tied to an ominous new asteroid near Earth! Faced with an enemy blooming out of control, It's up to Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians to band together, stop the impending destruction and save Mamoru!

Viz describes the "Make Up! Sailor Guardians" short:

Usagi and Chibi-Usa are at the cafe when they overhear two girls debating which of the Sailor Guardians is the best. Will Usagi's alter-ego, Sailor Moon, end up being their favorite?

The film originally opened in Japan in 1993. Geneon Entertainment previously released the film on VHS and DVD between 1999-2004. The "Make Up! Sailor Guardians" anime short also premiered in 1993.
