Live-action web ad also streamed for game available on iOS on December 15

Nintendo began streaming a gameplay trailer on Wednesday for its upcoming Super Mario Run mobile platformer game, revealing unlockable playable characters including Luigi, Yoshi, and Toad. Players can unlock Luigi and Yoshi through the Kingdom Builder mode and unlock Toad as a My Nintendo reward. The trailer also introduces gameplay elements such as pause blocks, cannons, and challenge coins.

Nintendo also streamed a web commercial for the game.

Super Mario Run will be similar to other Mario platform games, but playable with one hand. The game will have three modes. "World Tour" is the main gameplay mode featuring six worlds of platforming courses where Mario runs automatically. The "Kingdom Builder" mode will allow players to customize their own kingdom using elements from the Mario series. The game will also have a "Toad Rally" mode for competitive open-ended gameplay (with no flagpole at the end).

Super Mario Run will launch on iPhone and iPad on December 15 with a retail price of US$9.99. Nintendo has stated that this is a one-time payment and will grant unlimited access to the game's three modes. The game can also be downloaded at no cost, but players will have limited access to each mode. The game will launch in 151 countries and regions.

Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the game at Apple's Special Event in September. Nintendo plans to release the game via the App Store for "iOS first."
