A-1 Pictures, Porter Robinson's 'Shelter' Anime Short Airs on Toonami on December 31

Short to be 1st anime work to air with subtitles on Toonami

Jason DeMarco, senior vice-president and creative director for Adult Swim, confirmed on Twitter on Friday that Porter Robinson, A-1 Pictures, and Crunchyroll's "Shelter" anime music video short will air on Toonami on December 31. DeMarco stated the airing will mark the first time Toonami is airing an anime work with subtitles.

Robinson was the scriptwriter and executive producer, and Toshifumi Akai (animation director on Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, Toradora!, Kokoro Connect) served as the director. Megumi Kouno (chief animation director for The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls) handled key animation and character design. Sachika Misawa (Accel World) provided the voice of the main character Rin.

The companies began streaming the short on October 18, and the video's description is as follows:

Shelter tells the story of Rin, a 17-year-old girl who lives her life inside of a futuristic simulation completely by herself in infinite, beautiful loneliness. Each day, Rin awakens in virtual reality and uses a tablet which controls the simulation to create a new, different, beautiful world for herself. Until one day, everything changes, and Rin comes to learn the true origins behind her life inside a simulation.

Robinson stated that Japanese pop culture and anime have influenced his music. He described his video as a "concrete distillation of being immersed into fantasy and it's connection to reality."

Robinson and songwriter Madeon released the song "Shelter" in August.
