Laughing Under the Clouds/Donten ni Warau Gaiden Manga Ends

Series of side stories launched in 2014

This year's March issue of Mag Garden's Comic Garden magazane published the final chapter of Kemuri Karakara's Donten ni Warau Gaiden (Laughing Under the Clouds - Side Story) sequel manga on Friday. The third and final volume will ship on March 14.

Karakara launched Donten ni Warau Gaiden on Mag Garden's "Beat's" manga site in 2014 after running the original Donten ni Warau manga in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus magazine from 2011-2013. The next chapter is slated to launch on Beat's on February 10. The first volume had a limited edition that included a drama CD.

The manga includes stories not told in the original manga, including some from the past and some from the future. The original manga's story takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era, when the number of people in Japan who feel dissatisfaction toward the government are increasing due to the increasing speed of Westernization and the ban on samurai. In order to curb the increased rate of crime, the government opens a new prison. The three brothers of the Kumo family are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them on the way.

The original Laughing Under the Clouds manga inspired a 12-episode television anime in 2014. Funimation streamed the series as it aired with both English subtitles and an English broadcast dub, one of two shows that debuted its broadcast dubbing strategy. The manga has also inspired several stage plays and an upcoming live-action film.

Karakara launched the ongoing Rengoku ni Warau (Laughing in Purgatory) prequel manga in Monthly Comic Garden in January 2014.
