The return of the character (as voiced by real-life singer May'n) is the first part of a series of commemorations for the Macross franchise's 35th anniversary this year. Among the other announcements are virtual reality, live music concert, theater, planetarium, amusement center, projection mapping display, toy, shop, and network projects. There is also a new television anime planned for 2018. Sankyo, the company that presented the music video on Sunday, is primarily a maker of game machines for pachinko parlors and the owner of Macross Frontier's anime studio Satelight.
Sheryl Nome is a singer and "Galactic Fairy" idol in the 2008 Macross Frontier anime. Aya Endō voiced the character, and singer May'n performed as Sheryl's singing voice. In the anime, Sheryl is a key part of the story, and is part of the love triangle that forms the central relationship of the story.
