Manga Publishers Discuss Legal Action Against Upload Site
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Several Japanese publishers, including Kodansha and Shogakukan, are discussing legal procedures against a site called FreeBooks, which allegedly allowed users to view and share manga, magazines, and books without their copyright owners' permission.
According to the publishers, they were made aware of the site at the end of last year. The website purported to being a file-sharing site where users could upload their "own work," including manga, magazines, dōjinshi, and novels. Shogakukan alleges that at least 600 Shogakukan titles have been uploaded to the site. Kodansha also claims that the site has several hundred of its titles, including issues of Weekly Shōnen Magazine.
The site has been closed since May 3, but both publishers say they are keeping watch in case it reopens.
