Square Enix announced during a livestream event on Saturday that its Final Fantasy XIV game is getting a Patch 4.1 in early October. The livestream also revealed a visual for the new patch (pictured below).

The patch, titled "The Legend Returns," will include, among other improvements:

  • New main scenario quests, sidequests (new chapter in Hildbrand storyline) and Beast Tribe quests (The Kojin)
  • New instanced dungeon (The Drowned City of Skalla)
  • New PvP content titled "Rival Wings," which includes a training exercise between two teams of 24 (will be in patch 4.15)
  • Battle system updates
  • Updates for The Lost Canals of Uznair
  • Updates for Adventurer Squadron
  • Housing updates including a relocation service, swimming in residential areas, and Shirogane plots
  • Updates and changes to crafting, gathering, and items
  • A new "Perform" action for Bards
  • New Cross-world features allowing for cross-world alliance parties, PvP custom matches, private messages, and friend registration
  • New "Ultimate" difficulty content

The livestream also revealed more information about the previously revealed "Return to Ivalice" alliance raid (Ivalice is the name of the setting where the Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, and Vagrant Story games take place). The below artwork shown during the livestream is of Rabanastre (a city in Final Fantasy XII).

Return to Ivalice will launch with patch 4.1. Game designer and "father of Ivalice" Yasumi Matsuno is writing the scenario for the raid, and Keita Amemiya (GARO) is designing the bosses.

Square Enix is hosting the 14-hour livestream event on Saturday for the game to commemorate its fourth anniversary.

Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV Online for personal computers in September 2010. After criticism from fans, the company revealed an updated version of the game titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn that added a new world and story. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launched on Windows PC and PS3 in August 2013, and then on PS4 in April 2014. Square Enix released the first expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, titled Heavensward, in June 2015. The second expansion, Stormblood, launched on June 20.

The Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light live-action television miniseries launched on Netflix in the United States on Friday.
