Live-Action The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Film Opens at #2

Code Geass opens at #9, Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel earns 700 million yen

The live-action film of Shūichi Asō's Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) manga opened at #2 at the Japanese box office from October 21-22. The film sold 156,000 tickets on 275 screens for 194 million yen (about US$1.7 million). Yūichi Fukuda (live-action HK/Hentai Kamen, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store, Gintama) is directing the film. The original manga and film follow the everyday life of Kusuo Saiki, a 16-year-old high school student who also has psychic powers. The manga has also inspired a television anime series, with an upcoming second season premiering in early 2018.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower, the first film in the Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel anime film trilogy, fell from #1 to #4 in its second weekend at the box office. The film has now earned a total of more than 700 million yen (about US$6.14 million). The film topped the box office ranking in its first weekend in both attendance and box office earnings. The movie sold 247,509 tickets for 413,030,840 yen (about US$3.69 million) in two days for a per-screen average of 3,226,802 yen (US$29,000) in its first weekend.

Ajin, the live-action film based on Gamon Sakurai's Ajin - Demi-Human manga, dropped from #5 to #8 in its fourth weekend. The film has now earned more than 1.2 billion yen (about US$10.5 million), and it is expected to earn 1.5 billion yen (US$13 million). Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass, Space Travelers, Bayside Shakedown) directed the film. Takeru Satoh and Gō Ayano star in the film.

Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Kōdō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Awakening Path), the first film in the planned compilation film trilogy for the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 anime series, opened at #9. The films recap all 50 episodes of both Code Geass series. The cast are re-recording all their lines for the films, and the films include new scenes. The second film in the trilogy, Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Handō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Rebellion Path), will open on February 10.

The live-action film of Musawo's Love and Lies manga fell off the top 10 chart in its second weekend.

The third Uchū Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love or Star Blazers 2202: Warriors of Love) film fell off the main top 10 chart in its second weekend, but it topped the mini-theater rankings for the second weekend in a row. The film, subtitled "Junai-hen" (Pure Love Chapter), is screening in 25 theaters.

Yowamushi Pedal Re:Generation fell from #2 to #3 on the mini-theater rankings in its second weekend. The compilation film incorporates footage from the third anime season with some new shots.
