2nd Code Geass Anime Compilation Film Reveals New Visual, Song Performers

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The official website for the Code Geass project revealed the second key visual on Tuesday for Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Handō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Rebellion Path), the second film in the planned compilation film trilogy for the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 anime series. The film's staff also revealed the song performers for the film.

Sakura Fujiwara (live-action March comes in like a lion theme song) will perform the new song "The Moon" as the film's theme song. Ali Project's "Yūkyō Seishunka" (Brave Youth Song), which was the first ending theme song for the original television anime, will be the film's opening theme song. Yuka Aisaka (Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Active Raid theme songs) will perform "Ima wa Koko ni" (Here Now) as an insert song.

The anime film will open in Japan on February 10.

The three films are titled, in order of continuity: Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Kōdō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Awakening Path), Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Handō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Rebellion Path), and Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Ōdō (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - The Imperial Path). The first film opened in Japan on October 21, and the third is slated to open in May 2018.

The films will recap all 50 episodes of both Code Geass series. The cast are re-recording all their lines for the films, and the films will include new scenes.

In addition, the franchise will receive two new spinoff works that will launch this fall on the official website of Yatate Bunko, Sunrise's new light novel imprint. The first spinoff is a manga titled Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch Gaiden - Shiro no Kishi, Kurenai no Yasha (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Lancelot & Guren), and it will center on stories about both Suzaku and Kallen that were not portrayed in the original story. Bisui Takahashi (Shūmatsu Sekai no Spellbreaker light novels) is penning the scenario, and Takahiro Kimura is drawing the character designs. Astrays is responsible for the new Knightmare Frame designs. The manga's first chapter will debut on December 22.

The second spinoff is titled Code Geass Danshō - Mosaic no Kakera (Code Geass Story Fragment - Piece of the Mosaic). The new work will debut this fall on the official website of Yatate Bunko, Sunrise's new light novel imprint. The work will be an omnibus work that will focus on six different protagonists whose lives are affected and changed by the events of the main story.

The original Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion television anime series premiered in Japan in 2006, while Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 premiered in 2008. The Adult Swim network aired both series in North America in 2008. Bandai Entertainment released both seasons on home video in North America before it stopped offering new DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and manga releases in 2012. Funimation announced its license of the series in 2013. The franchise is receiving a sequel project titled Code Geass: Fukkatsu no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection). The format of the sequel has not yet been revealed.

The five-part Code Geass: Akito the Exiled OVA is a spinoff of the original anime series, and is set in between the two seasons. The first episode debuted in Japan with a theatrical screening in 2012, and the fifth and final episode opened in theaters in Japan in February 2016. Funimation licensed the series in 2013, and premiered it at a screening at Otakon in August 2016. The company released the entire series on home video on June 27.
