Mononoke Manga Begins Final Arc

posted on by Karen Ressler
Manga follows original anime's "Bakeneko" arc

This year's April issue of Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Zenon magazine announced on Saturday that Yaeko Ninagawa's Mononoke manga will begin its final arc in the next issue on March 24. The manga is titled Mononoke: Bakeneko.

The 2007 Mononoke anime is the spinoff of the Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales anime. Specifically, it follows the medicine seller from the "Bakeneko" (Goblin Cat) arc. The Mononoke anime has five arcs, the last of which is titled "Bakeneko."

Ninagawa's original Mononoke manga adaptation (pictured right), which Square Enix published in two compiled volumes in 2008, also followed the Mononoke anime's "Bakeneko" arc. Comic Zenon did not confirm whether its Mononoke: Bakeneko manga is a completely new series or a reprint of this original manga. The magazine notes, "Mononoke began with 'Bakeneko' and will end with 'Bakeneko.'"

Ninagawa went on to draw manga adaptations for the other four anime arcs, which were published by Tokuma Shoten instead of Square Enix. Tokuma Shoten published the most recent arc, Mononoke: Nopperabō (Faceless Monster), in one compiled volume last November.

The original Mononoke anime is streaming on Crunchyroll, CONtv, Tubi TV, and Viewster. New Video Group released the series on DVD in North America in 2015.
