Film opens on September 14 in Japan

The staff of the live-action film adaptation of Mao Nanami's Real Girl (3D Kanojo) manga revealed a new still for the film on Thursday. The image show Ayami Nakajō and Yuri Tsunematsu as their respective characters Iroha and Arisa, respectively.

The staff also revealed a behind-the-scenes image.

The film will open in Japan on September 14. Tsutomu Hanabusa is directing the film with some of the same staff as his previous directorial work Heroine Shikkaku. Kana Nishino is performing the theme song "Bedtime Story."

Real Girl follows Hikari Tsutsui, a high school boy who is satisfied with the virtual girls he encounters in anime and games. He does not have many friends and he lives in his own world. One day, when he is stuck on pool cleaning duty, he is approached by Iroha, a "real girl" who is showy and popular with boys.

Ayami Nakajō and Hayato Sano (pictured below) are starring as Iroha and Hikari Tsutsui, respectively.

Other cast members include (from left to right in image below):

  • Hiroya Shimizu (live-action Chihayafuru) as Mitsuya Takanashi, a handsome boy who attends Iroha and Tsutsui's school
  • Yuri Tsunematsu (live-action Sakurada Reset) as Arisa Ishino, an energetic girl who is in love with Mitsuya
  • Moka Kamishiraishi (live-action HaruChika) as Sumie Ayado, an otaku girl who is Tsutsui's underclassman
  • Yūtarō as Yūto Itō, Tsutsui's one friend, a cat ear-loving otaku

In addition, the film has cast Riki Takeuchi, Mari Hamada, and Towa Araki (pictured clockwise after Kanda in image below) as Tsutsui's father, mother, and younger brother, respectively. Takahiro Miura (pictured bottom left) will play Iroha's physician, who holds an important key to the story. Sayaka Kanda (pictured top left) will voice the in-universe anime character Ezomichi.

The romantic comedy manga ran in Kodansha's Dessert magazine from July 2011 to May 2016, and Kodansha published the series in 12 compiled volumes. The manga has 1.2 million copies in print. Kodansha Comics is releasing the manga digitally in English.

The manga also inspired a 12-episode anime adaptation from director Takashi Naoya. The anime will get a second season in January.
