posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Film starring Junia Chihara, Nanaka Hirao opens on October 20

The official YouTube channel for the live-action film adaptation of Hiroyuki Shoji's Gokko (Pretend) manga began streaming three commercials on Saturday for the film.

The film will open in Japan on October 20.

The film stars comedian Junia Chihara as the protagonist, named Shiromiya in the film. Nanaka Hirao plays Yoyoko. The film also stars Yuka, Chisun, Fumika Shimizu, Taisaku Akino, Hideo Nakano, and Renji Ishibashi. Naoto Kumazawa (live-action Kimi ni Todoke) is directing the film. indigo la End are performing the film's theme song "Hokorobi Gokko" (Make-Believe Tear).

The manga's story begins when an unnamed 30-year-old shut-in finds a girl with signs of physical abuse left in the apartment unit opposite his own. He "kidnaps" the girl, names her Yoyoko, and they begin a relationship that the protagonist calls a fake father-daughter relationship.

Shoji launched the manga in Shueisha's Super Jump magazine in May 2010 and the series moved to Super Jump Premium in December 2011. The manga ended in September 2012. Shueisha published three compiled book volumes for the manga.

Shoji passed away on October 20, 2016. He debuted in 1997 with his "Koroshi no License" story, for which he won the Chiba Tetsuya award. He serialized his first series, Ichabod no Seikatsu, in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine from 2000 to 2002. His 10-sai Kaa-san and Zassō Kazoku manga remain unfinished, as they were ongoing at the time of his death.
