Saga of Tanya the Evil Film's 2nd Teaser Video, Story Intro Unveiled

posted on by Karen Ressler
Sequel film opens in Japan on February 8

The official website for the anime adaptation of Carlo Zen and Shinobu Shinotsuki's Saga of Tanya the Evil (Yōjo Senki) novel series revealed a second teaser video and teaser video for the upcoming anime film on Tuesday.

The website also unveiled an introduction to the film's original story, which follows from the events of the television anime. In 1926, Tanya and her battalion return home from defeating remnants of the Republic's army. However, when they arrive they receive word of a massive mobilization near the border with the Russy Federation, so the Empire's army must prepare. At the same time, a multinational army under the leadership of the Allied Kingdom moves into the Russy Federation. The enemy of an enemy is a friend, but among the Allied Kingdom army is Mary Sioux, a girl who has sworn to exact justice against the Empire for the death of her father.

The film will open in Japan on February 8, 2019.

Director Yutaka Uemura told Kadokawa's Newtype magazine in January that the movie will depict the change in relationship between Tanya and the top brass, as well as the development of her troops. Uemura also noted that there were originally no plans to make a film after the series finished, but the film was green-lit thanks to the support of fans. He added that the film will allow him to focus especially on the sound work for the film to optimize it for a theatrical presentation. In addition, he mentioned that he had recently watched Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, and that it will definitely influence the presentation of the film.

Most of the staff and cast are returning from the earlier television anime.

The television anime premiered in January 2017. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired, and Funimation streamed an English dub.

Carlo Zen and Shinobu Shinotsuki launched the novel series in 2013, and and Kadokawa published the 10th volume on September 29. The series has more than 3 million copies in print. Chika Tōjō's manga adaptation is serializing in Kadokawa's Monthly Comp Ace magazine, and the 11th volume will ship on November 24.

Yen Press licensed both the original light novel and the manga adaptation, and it describes the series:

High above the blood- and mud-soaked trenches, a young girl pits herself against army mages in high stakes aerial duels with bullets, spells, and bayonets. Her name is Tanya Degurechaff and she is the Devil of the Rhine, one of the greatest soldiers the Empire has ever seen! But inside her mind lives a ruthless, calculating ex-salaryman who enjoyed a peaceful life in Japan until he woke up in a war-torn world. Reborn as a destitute orphaned girl with nothing to her name but memories of a previous life, Tanya will do whatever it takes to survive, even if she can find it only behind the barrel of a gun!

A spinoff gourmet manga titled Yōjo Senki Shokudo by Kyōichi launched on November 25.
