Devilman Crybaby Director Masaaki Yuasa Reveals Crayon Shin-chan Spinoff Anime Super Shiro

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Spinoff centers on Nohara family dog as superhero

Director Masaaki Yuasa and his Science SARU studio announced on Sunday that they are producing an anime spinoff of the Crayon Shin-chan franchise titled Super Shiro. The anime will follow Shin's supposedly very normal dog Shiro, telling a story that Shiro is actually a super hero who protects the world.

Yuasa is serving as overall director, with Tomohisa Shimoyama (DEVILMAN crybaby animation director, key animator for Crayon Shin-chan movies 14 and 15) as chief director at Science SARU. Kimiko Ueno (Little Witch Academia, Crayon Shin-chan movies 21, 23, 26) is writing the scripts. TV Asahi, Shinei Animation, ADK EM, and Futabasha are producing the anime.

Yuasa (DEVILMAN crybaby, Lu over the wall, Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Kaiba, Ping Pong) has worked as a storyboarder and setting designer on many film entries in the Crayon Shin-chan anime series, most recently on the 2015 film Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari ~Saboten Daishūgeki.

TV Asahi has been airing the Crayon Shin-chan anime based on the late Yoshito Usui's manga of the same name since 1992. The show is consistently one of the most watched anime series in Japan. The anime also has a series of 26 films. The 27th film, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Shinkon Ryokō Hurricane ~Ushinawareta Hiroshi~ (Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Honeymoon Hurricane, Lost Hiroshi), will open in Japan on April 19.

Voice actress Akiko Yajima stepped down from her role as the show's protagonist after 26 years in June, and Yumiko Kobayashi replaced Yajima in the role.
