Warner Bros. Develops Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Film

The entertainment news website The Hollywood Reporter reported on Friday that Warner Bros. has confirmed that it is developing a sequel to the live-action Edge of Tomorrow film. Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying, Monster Trucks) is writing the script.

Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman and actors Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are expected to return if they approve of Robinson's script.

Liman revealed in May 2017 that a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow would be titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Liman said at that time that the movie would be both a prequel and a sequel, and that it would be "smaller." Liman revealed that the movie would be "mostly not on the battlefield," but that it would have a "whole new arena of fights."

Liman further noted in May 2017 that audiences "loved the comedy" in the first film, and that the planned sequel would focus on Cruise and Blunt's characters from the first film, in addition to a new character. Regarding the film's place in the story's timeline, Liman said, "It does pick up right where we left off, but it doesn't keep going forward because we screw with time, because the aliens screwed with time." Liman said about the films, "it's a two-movie franchise," adding, "there's the completion of the story we set up in the first movie."

Liman was attached to direct the sequel, and Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally were slated to produce the film as of May 2017. Joe Shrapnel (Race, Frankie & Alice) and Anna Waterhouse (Race, On the Shoulders of Giants) were writing the scripts. Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter (and Rogue Nation director) Christopher McQuarrie was "in talks" to be a producer on the film, and he was developing the script with Shrapnel and Waterhouse.

Cruise said in July 2015 that he pitched an idea for a sequel to the film. He presented the idea when he met with McQuarrie and Liman.

The Edge of Tomorrow film adapted the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. In addition to Cruise and Blunt, the film starred Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, Bill Paxton, Kidus Henok, Tony Way, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The film opened in the United States in June 2014.

Viz Media published Sakurazaka's novel in English to launch its Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy in 2009. Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei) drew the book's cover. Viz Media also released a one-volume full-color graphic novel adaptation of the story in 2014. Nick Mamatas (Move Under Ground) adapted the story, and Lee Ferguson (Green Arrow, Miranda Mercury) drew the art.

The novel spawned a manga by artist Takeshi Obata (Hikaru no Go, Death Note, Bakuman.) and writer Ryōsuke Takeuchi (ST&RS) in Shueisha's Young Jump magazine in 2014. Sakurazaka himself said in 2014 that he was working on a sequel novel.
