Gintama Gets New Anime Project 'Probably'

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Most recent anime based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga aired from July through October

The "Gintama Shirogane Matsuri 2019 (Kari)" event (event visual pictured below) on Sunday teased that a new Gintama anime is in production. The event did not provide any other details for the project.

However, the video above qualifies the announcement, "Gintama Production Committee: Production on Gintama anime's brand-new project green-lit … probably. Since the manga isn't over yet…. But we think we're gonna do it, we guess. Well, just get ready."

The previous anime premiered in October 2017, and began with the "Porori Arc" story, before it entered the "Silver Soul" arc in January 2018. The anime entered into a hiatus after episode 353, which aired in March 2018. The anime then returned as Gintama: Gin no Tamashii Hen (Gintama: Silver Soul Arc) on July 8, and ended its run in October. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired.

Silver Soul is the title of the manga's final arc that began in July 2016.

Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga ended its run in Weekly Shonen Jump in last year's 42nd issue on September 15 as planned, but Shueisha announced on September 15 that the manga would continue "for a little while longer" in Shueisha's Jump Giga magazine. The manga's ran in Jump Giga for three consecutive issues, but will now continue in a free Gintama app.

The manga has also inspired two anime films, various OVAs and event anime, two live-action films, and two live-action net spinoff series.
