ZUN Announces Touhou Project's 17th Game

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Game's demo releases on May 5 at event, with planned completion this summer

Japanese dōjin developer ZUN (founder and sole member of the Team Shanghai Alice dōjin game developer circle) announced a new game for his Touhou Project series on April 17. The game is the 17th game in the main series and is titled Touhou Kikeijū: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature.

ZUN stated he plans to complete the game by this summer, and plans to release a demo at the "Hakurei Jinja Reitaisai" event on May 5. In the game's story, animal spirits from hell are scheming to take over the world, and Reimu, Marisa, and Yōmu along with friendly animal spirits from hell go to preemptively stop them. ZUN said the game is darker than usual, and is a bit more of an "offensive shooting game" with lots of animal elements.

Touhou: Hidden Star in Four Seasons, the 16th and latest main installment in the Touhou Project series, debuted at the Comiket 92 event in August 2017. ZUN's Touhou Project Dai-16.5-Dan Hifū Nightmare Diary ~Violet Detector game launched at the Comiket 94 event last August.

Team Shanghai Alice released the first game in the series, Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers, in 1995 on the PC-98 platform. Since then, the series has spawned other main games, multiple spin-offs, and many fan-made derivative works based on characters and stories from the series.

Playism released Touhou: Double Dealing Character in May 2015 as the first official release of any game in the Touhou Project series in English-speaking territories. Playism, NIS America, and XSEED Games have released some of the fan-made games based on the franchise.
