Polygon Pictures Wins 1st Saturn Award With Star Wars: Resistance Animated Series

The Saturn Awards, the awards that honor the best science fiction, horror, and fantasy movies and television programs of the year, announced the winners of the 45th awards on Friday. Polygon Pictures won its first Saturn Award for Best Animated Series on Television with it and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Resistance animated series.

Polygon Pictures is animating the series. The show premiered on Disney Channel in the United States in October 2018, and thereafter, on Disney XD and around the world. The second season will premiere on Disney Channel and DisneyNow on October 6.

The series follows the adventures of Kazuda "Kaz" Xiono (voiced by Christopher Sean), a newly minted Resistance pilot tasked to spy on the growing threat of the First Order. As part of his undercover mission, he joins "Team Fireball," a racing team on the station Colossus.

The series is set before the events of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens film and also features such characters as Leia Organa, Poe Dameron, and Captain Phasma (as voiced by Rachel Butera, Oscar Isaac, and Gwendoline Christie, respectively).

Dave Filoni created the series, with Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman as executive producers. Amy Beth Christenson is the art director.

Star Wars: Resistance has also been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program.

Polygon Pictures is perhaps best known for the two Ajin television anime series and film trilogy, and the Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei film trilogy. It also contributed to the animation of 2008's Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which won the Outstanding Special Class Animated Program category in the Daytime Emmy Awards two years in a row. Amazon and Polygon Pictures' Lost in Oz: Extended Adventure special won three of the five awards for which it was nominated at the 44th Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2017. Goro Miyazaki and Polygon Pictures ' Ronja the Robber's Daughter television anime won the Animation category at the International Emmy Kids Awards in 2016. The studio previously adapted Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia and Blame! manga into 3DCG anime films and series, and established a joint venture with the manga creator in March 2018.

Alita: Battle Angel was nominated for the Best Science Fiction Film Release award at the Saturn Awards this year, but Ready Player One won the award. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was nominated in the Best Fantasy Film Release category and in the Best Film Special/Visual Effects category. Additionally, Millie Bobby Brown was nominated in the Best Performance by a Younger Actor category for her performance in the film, and Bear McCreary was nominated in the Best Film Music category for the film. The film, however, did not win any awards. No anime were nominated in the Best Animated Film Release category.

Last year, Makoto Shinkai's your name. film and FUNimation Entertainment's Speed Racer collector's edition were up for Saturn Awards, but neither won.
